Ripple’s RLUSD Trading Volume Surges 96%, Will It Challenge Tether’s Dominance?

Ripple’s ambitious stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD), is drawing significant market attention as its trading volume has surged explosively amid a broader correction in the cryptocurrency market. While major cryptocurrencies have entered a period of consolidation, RLUSD is rapidly solidifying its position as a safe haven asset and a key liquidity provider within the ecosystem.

According to CoinMarketCap on the 16th, RLUSD’s 24-hour trading volume soared 96.16% from the previous day to reach $177.92 million. Its market capitalization stands at $1.52 billion, ranking 46th in the overall cryptocurrency market. The token’s 1:1 peg to the U.S. dollar remains highly stable at $1.00.

The primary driver behind the sharp increase in trading volume appears to be a flight to safety amid heightened volatility in Bitcoin (BTC) and major altcoins. Following a weekend rally, a wave of short-term profit-taking triggered market weakness, prompting investors to shift large amounts of capital into stablecoins, which maintain stable value.

Notably, RLUSD has only 7,440 holders despite its market capitalization exceeding $1.5 billion. This strongly suggests that rather than retail investors, institutional players and large-scale whales are utilizing RLUSD in significant volumes for purposes such as cross-border payment testing, DeFi liquidity provision, or securing cash positions in preparation for market downturns.

Market experts remain highly optimistic about RLUSD’s future prospects. As Ripple Labs intensifies its efforts to expand an institutional DeFi ecosystem based on the XRP Ledger (XRPL), RLUSD—serving as the ecosystem’s base currency—is expected to see increased adoption. Recent developments, including Ripple executives joining advisory committees at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), are also viewed as catalysts that could accelerate institutional capital inflows amid improving regulatory conditions.

With Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) firmly dominating the global stablecoin market, attention is now focused on how quickly RLUSD can capture market share, leveraging its explosive trading volume and growing institutional trust.
