Police Launch Investigation into Theft of 6.9 Billion Won in Seized Crypto from National Tax Service
Police have launched an investigation into the theft of seized cryptocurrency from the National Tax Service (NTS).
The Cyber Terror Response Division of the National Police Agency announced on the 28th that it began a preliminary inquiry (internal investigation) into the case after receiving a request for investigation from the NTS the previous day.
On the 26th, the NTS distributed a press release promoting the collection of delinquent taxes and accidentally exposed a photo of a “mnemonic” phrase that serves as the master key for a virtual asset cold wallet.
Shortly afterward, claims were raised that virtual assets worth $4.8 million, approximately 6.9 billion won, had been stolen.
Police stated, “Considering the seriousness of the matter, we initiated a preliminary inquiry immediately upon receiving the case and will proceed swiftly with the investigation.”
