As Bitcoin (BTC) and XRP (Ripple) have plunged simultaneously in recent days, freezing investor sentiment, concerns are growing over whether this is an opportunity to buy the dip. Experts advise that while the long-term value of both assets remains intact, their extreme short-term volatility calls for a cautious approach rather than trying to catch a falling knife.
According to investment outlet The Motley Fool on February 12 (local time), the cryptocurrency market experienced a sharp downturn in the first week of February, creating one of the worst environments in years. Bitcoin has fallen 22% over the past 30 days, while XRP has dropped 32% during the same period, suffering significant losses. Although such steep declines may present opportunities for long-term investors with strong conviction, there are warnings that premature entry could result in costly lessons.
Bitcoin still retains its structural advantage as a scarce asset designed to hedge against currency devaluation caused by government policy mistakes. Despite the recent deterioration in investor sentiment, its intrinsic value as an independent asset that governments cannot arbitrarily print remains valid. However, short-term headwinds persist, including growing risk-off sentiment, weakness in technology stocks, and $620 million in outflows from spot Bitcoin ETFs on February 4 alone, making dip-buying particularly risky.
An analyst advised that anyone purchasing BTC at the current level should assume their judgment could be wrong over the next year. In other words, rather than making aggressive purchases, a strategy of gradual accumulation through smaller, divided investments may be more effective, prioritizing survival over an immediate rebound.
For XRP, institutional adoption is essential for long-term success. The ecosystem can only become self-sustaining if it builds network effects in areas such as cross-border payments and tokenized asset management. While Ripple continues to enhance the functionality of the XRP Ledger (XRPL) regardless of market conditions—raising expectations for user growth and value appreciation in the medium term—the short-term trend remains bearish.
In conclusion, buying XRP is suitable only for investors with a high risk tolerance who are prepared to endure short-term losses. The analyst added that waiting a few weeks for market stability before entering may prove to be a wiser strategy.
