Recent suspicious transaction activity has been detected in the Bitcoin (BTC) wallet listed in the ransom note for the kidnapping of Nancy Guthrie, marking a new phase in the investigation.
According to cryptocurrency-focused outlet The Crypto Basic on February 11 (local time), active transactions were detected at the Bitcoin wallet address included in the ransom note sent by the suspect who kidnapped Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-host of the Today Show. Harvey Levin, founder of TMZ, reported that a transaction occurred in the wallet for the first time since the ransom note was made public, while local broadcaster KGUN9 confirmed the deposited amount was less than $300, approximately $152. On-chain data analysis showed that about 0.0022 BTC was transferred in a single transaction to the wallet.
Guthrie, 84, went missing from her home near Tucson, Arizona, on January 31, and authorities have classified the case as a forced abduction. In the ransom note delivered to media outlets, the suspect initially demanded $4 million in exchange for her safe return, later increasing the demand to $6 million. The recent wallet activity, occurring after the final payment deadline of February 9 had already passed, is raising expectations that it could become a decisive clue in identifying the perpetrator.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos stated that authorities are closely tracking the flow of funds in the wallet in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Officials have released doorbell camera footage from the day of the disappearance showing an armed individual wearing a ski mask at Guthrie’s residence, and one unidentified person has been detained for questioning in southern Tucson in connection with the investigation. Security experts noted that due to the transparency of blockchain technology, even small transactions could increase the likelihood of exposing the suspect’s location when attempting to cash out the funds.
Guthrie’s children, Savannah, Annie, and Camron, have repeatedly stated that they are prepared to meet the demands to ensure their mother’s safe return. The family is urgently seeking contact with the suspect, while authorities continue extensive search operations, including deploying SWAT teams in nearby areas. The Bitcoin wallet in question remains publicly viewable, drawing global attention to any further movements of funds.
As digital asset transaction records remain permanently recorded, the recent wallet activity could provide a crucial breakthrough leading to Guthrie’s safe return. Investigators are dedicating all available resources to pinpointing the suspect’s location based on the secured data.
