Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin criticized the current DeFi structure, arguing that most DeFi is “fake.” Posting on X, he said, “True DeFi is not about yield optimization but about decentralizing counterparty risk. USDC-based lending and deposit strategies rely on centralized assets and therefore fail to meet DeFi’s core principles of self-custody and decentralization. By contrast, overcollateralized algorithmic stablecoins (which maintain a one-dollar value by overcollateralizing with cryptocurrencies and have no centralized issuer) can distribute risk through market makers, making them closer to genuine DeFi.”
