The Return of Satoshi Nakamoto? $170,000 Deposited Into Genesis Wallet
As a large amount of Bitcoin was deposited into a wallet linked to Bitcoin (BTC) creator Satoshi Nakamoto, speculation has resurfaced that the anonymous founder may have become active again, drawing significant attention from the cryptocurrency industry.
Yahoo Finance reported on February 10 (local time) that a mysterious transaction had occurred in the so-called Genesis wallet associated with Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. According to on-chain analytics firm Arkham, 2.5 BTC was deposited into the wallet last Friday, worth approximately $174,405 at the time. The wallet is the symbolic address that received a 50 BTC reward when the Genesis Block, the first block of the Bitcoin network, was created on January 3, 2009.
The transaction has reignited speculation within the crypto community that Satoshi Nakamoto may still be alive or active. Analysts believe the deposited funds originated from a wallet linked to Binance, suggesting it was likely sent intentionally as a tribute to Bitcoin’s creator. Since wallet addresses can receive funds from anyone, deposits can be made without the recipient’s consent or activity, supporting this interpretation.
The Genesis wallet has received small donations and tributes in the past, but a deposit exceeding $170,000 is highly unusual. About two years ago, a user also drew attention by sending 26.917 BTC to the wallet, and with the latest transaction, the wallet’s total balance has increased to approximately 57 BTC. Satoshi Nakamoto is estimated to hold around 1.1 million BTC, roughly 5.5% of the total Bitcoin supply, though those funds have not moved even once since December 2010.
Cryptocurrency experts analyze that the recent deposit is more likely an expression of respect for a symbolic figure in the Bitcoin ecosystem or an attempt to permanently burn assets, rather than evidence of Nakamoto’s return. Bitcoin sent to this wallet is effectively considered removed from circulation, limiting its impact on market supply. However, concerns persist that if Nakamoto’s massive holdings, dormant for more than 15 years, were to enter the market, it could cause a devastating shock to the entire market.
The mystery surrounding the identity and whereabouts of Bitcoin’s creator remains one of the central narratives of the cryptocurrency market. Aniket Verma, the Yahoo Finance writer who reported on the transaction, explained that an inflow of funds into a wallet linked to Satoshi Nakamoto alone cannot confirm active involvement, and that tangible activity would require evidence of funds moving out of the wallet. Investors should avoid overreacting to simple inflows and instead closely monitor fundamental market changes and regulatory developments.
