Ripple Mints 20 Million More RLUSD, Will It Challenge the Top Stablecoin Spot?

Ripple has issued an additional 20 million RLUSD tokens to secure liquidity for its enterprise-focused stablecoin, strengthening its push for greater market dominance.

According to cryptocurrency media outlet U.Today on February 20 (local time), Ripple minted 20 million RLUSD to increase the circulating supply of its stablecoin, Ripple USD (RLUSD). The issuance was carried out through RLUSD Treasury, Ripple’s stablecoin management division. The newly minted tokens were immediately transferred to strategic addresses to support liquidity provision and partnerships.

RLUSD is a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar and operates simultaneously on both the XRP Ledger and the Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. Since its official launch in December 2024, Ripple has regularly minted and burned tokens to adjust liquidity in line with real-time market demand. This latest issuance comes as demand for corporate payments and institutional financial services surges ahead of the anticipated passage of the U.S. crypto market structure bill, known as the CLARITY Act.

A significant portion of the newly issued 20 million RLUSD was transferred to wallets associated with Gemini, one of Ripple’s key partners. Gemini is conducting a pilot program with Ripple to utilize RLUSD for stable settlement within Mastercard credit card payment systems. The large-scale token movement is seen not merely as testing, but as a preparatory step toward the launch of full commercial services.

To ensure transparency, Ripple backs RLUSD reserves 100% with secure assets such as U.S. Treasury bonds and cash, and undergoes monthly audits by external institutions. While Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC) continue to dominate the stablecoin market, Ripple is rapidly expanding its market capitalization—currently valued at approximately $1.33 billion—by leveraging regulatory compliance and its extensive financial institution network.

Synergy with Ripple Payments, the company’s cross-border remittance service powered by XRP, is also expected. By using a stablecoin to reduce cryptocurrency volatility risk while combining it with the fast processing speed of the XRP Ledger, Ripple aims to strengthen its role as a bridge between traditional finance and the blockchain ecosystem. As institutional adoption of stablecoins accelerates, RLUSD issuance is projected to increase more sharply in the coming quarters.
